Motion TV Wall Mounts

It was amazing when large flat-screen HDTVs first came out. It was a revelation to mount them on our walls and enjoy fabulous high-definition video from the comfort of our couches.

But we soon had more revelations. We realized that you couldn’t watch the TV from anywhere else in the room without getting a stiff neck – and that it was difficult playing video games while we were on the floor and the monitor was high up on the wall – and that smaller HDTVs mounted in kitchens and bedrooms were difficult to watch unless you were directly in front of them. We also found that there was no practical way to mount a TV in an out-of-the-way location so it wouldn’t ruin the look of a beautiful room, and still be able to watch it.

In short, we found that wall-mounted HDTVs often aren’t as terrific as they first seem, unless they’re on a mount that can swivel, rotate and tilt. The right motion wall mount lets us point the display in any direction we want, so we don’t have to make accommodations just to be able to see the TV screen.

How to Choose a Motion Wall Mount

There are three considerations to keep in mind when browsing our Cmple wall mount listings. The first is the weight of the HDTV or monitor you’ll be mounting, the second is its screen size, and the third is what you’d like the mount to be able to do. Let’s take them one at a time.

When hanging something heavy from a wall, you naturally need a support which is able to handle the weight. Cmple wall mounts are rated for the weight they can support; generally speaking, standard mounts can handle up to 44 pounds, and heavy-duty ones can support HDTVs weighing up to 99 pounds. However, there are exceptions like our Cmple heavy-duty mount designed for smaller screens, which has a weight limit of 55 pounds – so always be sure to check the specifications before buying.

There are also specs for each mount based on the monitor size that its brackets can fit. You’ll see our wall mounts listed with the range of sizes they can accommodate, such as 13-32 inches or 37-63 inches. Once again, be sure to choose the proper sized mount for your HDTV.

Finally, Cmple motion wall mounts will have a selection of one, two or three different functions they can perform. You may not need all of them, but you’ll be disappointed if you choose a mount that doesn’t move the way you want it to.

Swivel: This function lets you turn the screen between 60 and 90 degrees, either left or right. It allows you, for example, to point your TV to one side for optimal viewing from your favorite chair in the corner of the room, swing it the other way to face the kids’ play area, and then return it to its normal position facing the couch. It’s also an extremely convenient way to use a single HDTV in a kitchen/dining area, so that it can be swiveled to face the counter while you’re preparing food, the stove while you’re cooking, and the dining room table when you’re eating.
Rotate: A mount that can rotate 360° provides the ultimate in flexibility. You can rotate the screen so that instead of being in the normal landscape or horizontal position, it can be turned to be viewed in portrait or vertical position. Some find this important for watching or viewing computer files created in portrait mode, others simply want to rotate their TV so they can tuck it into a vertical cabinet when it’s not being watched.
Tilt: Being able to tilt the screen up or down, by as much as 15°, lets you set the viewing angle to the optimal spot for your normal viewing location. It also allows you adjust the monitor’s angle so you can see a perfect picture whether you’re sitting on the floor, on a high barstool, or swinging from a hammock suspended from the ceiling.

You’ll also see some mounts listed as being full motion. This usually means that they will swivel and tilt, and that the TV can also be pulled out so that it extends further from the wall.

TV manufacturers use standard patterns defined by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) for the mounting holes on their equipment, and our mounts use the same patterns so they’ll always be a perfect match. There are different VESA configurations depending on the size of the HDTV (they’re expressed by numbers like 200x200, 400x200, and so on), but if you’re choosing the proper size of mount for your TV as discussed earlier, you won’t have a problem.
